Chemical substances

Chemicals and Hazardous Waste Department is a structural unit of the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC). The Department keeps its tradition since beginning of 2000, when it was established as a structural unit within the Latvian Environment Data Centre.

The Department has to:

  • establish, hold and update the registers of chemical substances and chemical products according to the EU requirements;
  • partake in the process of origination of legislative acts and technical documentation referable to the handling and accounting of chemical substances and chemical products;
  • stimulate awareness of the society about wholesome and environmentally friendly and safe use of chemical substances and chemical products;
  • manage proper actions, in the frames of the Department's competence, set up by the national programmes and the international agreements, which covers a field of chemicals.

LEGMC is a Competent Authority for implementation of the REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, the CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, the Biocidal Products Directive 98/8/EC. The Department also is a Designated National Authority for the implementation of the Export-Import Regulation (EC) No. 689/2008 regarding industrial chemicals, as well as the Competent Authority for the evaluation of certain surfactants under the Detergents Regulation (EC) No. 648/2004.
